Click here for a letter from John K. Sorensen, the President and CEO of the Iowa Bankers Association. His letter speaks of the strength of Iowa banks and their role in our community. For example, did you know:

  • 83% of mortgage loans in Iowa have been made to prime borrowers and only 7% are either fixed or adjustable rate sub-prime loans.  Sub-prime loans with adjustable rates (ARMs) are where the bulk of problems are nationwide.  Iowa has only .03% sub-prime ARM loans.

Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008

provided by Randy Kramer of Kramer, Ernst  & Swedean, P.C.

The single largest provision in the $15.1 billion package of housing tax incentives in the recently enacted “Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008” (the Housing Act) is a measure allowing individuals buying their first home to take a tax credit of up to $7,500 of the purchase price. Designed to help reduce the existing stock of unoccupied housing, the tax credit allows qualified homebuyers to subtract the credit amount from their federal income tax when they buy a home. However, they are then required to pay the credit back over 15 years. The result is that the credit resembles an interest-free loan that must be repaid to the government.

Click here for all the details of the new credit.
